I "overreacted" almost 5 years ago. Damn glad I did. Now I don't have to worry so much about this stuff any more.

They buried the family today. There hasn't been any mention in Maryland about the funeral director dying. Does anyone know for sure that he/she died? The only place I see it mentioned is the recombinomics site.

There are some people I know that have come down with the flu pretty bad, did not take the flu shot, and now taking steroids (because of complications w/asthma)? Just horrible.

Regarding vitamin C: Just drink it down quickly, and it will be ok.
By the way, the apatite in the teeth is restored from acid break-down by the saliva. There is OH- in it, it will attach in the location in apatite meant for a negatively charged particle.

Wife and I just recovered from double infections (upper respiratory and sinus). Had us on steroids, antibiotics and a VERY strong cough suppressant.
Kids were not effected...thank God.
What's weird is that we didn't take our flu shots this year. Doctor got all bent out of shape about this until the lab results came back negative on both flue and strep.
Whatever we had was pretty nasty.

Hope this was a fluke but I now know how to make Lipo. C and have the ingredients on their way... I think I'll also just add an additional C tab to my daily vitamins. I usually just take a multi but some extra C shouldn't hurt.

I had the flu last week and it knocked me on my ass for the whole week. This week I have a bad, productive cough (sinus drainage, not lung gunk). Going to the Dr later to check that out (suspect draing sinus infection).

My sixteen y/o son came home last saturday at noon with a slight fever and mild cough. We treated at home for the weekend, then took him into the Ped's doc Tuesday at noon. They tested for strep and mono with both tests being negative. Wife did the ask a nurse BS Tuesday night, they wanted him in a steam room (hot shower in small bathroom)to see if it would help with the cough and slight wheezing. his temp shot up to 103.7, we took him to ER, they tested for the same dam things, again both negative. Seth has asthma and has been using his inhaler to open up lungs. ER asked if he was coughing up blood.
One of my guys at work had his 13 y/o grandson in the Ped's ICU unit where they almost lost him, he is out and doing fine now. I'm waiting for the MD to call back, I'm going to tell the doc to quit f78king around and help the kid. I think he should be hospitalized so they can get the fever under control. Any suggestions would be a blessing.
Nurse just called back, said to stick with cold compress and drinks (Power Ade) I asked about flu, she asked if he was tested, I said no, she is supposed to call back again.

A friend's son, 3 years old, just got diagnosed with the flu and pneumonia. Temp 104 F. This is in Europe though. Not the US. Still, made me think of this thread.

My daughter's housemate (age 22)had flu and then pneumonia as well about 2 weeks ago. My kid started with a bad cough about a week ago and she went to the doctor and told the RPA that her housemate had flu and pneumonia. They gave her nothing and said to take Nyquil to help her sleep. They're both fine now.
Daughter at home had a very sudden onset "something" today. High fever, lethargy, sore throat and slight productive cough. I gave her some of the Tamiflu I got for the last scare. She's starting to feel better, but her school is full of hacking, sick kids.

I should add that my friend's son went from being fine to horribly ill practically overnight. It hit him really fast.

FWIW: http://fluboard.rhizalabs.com/forum/view....CDC Confirms Typical Human Influenza A H3N2 Virus in Maryland March 16, 2012 -- CDC has confirmed that the influenza viruses isolated from the cluster of severe respiratory illness in one family in Maryland are seasonal influenza A H3N2 viruses. Genetic sequencing has confirmed that this is a typical human seasonal H3N2 virus that is more than 99% similar to other H3N2 influenza viruses submitted by the state of Maryland this season. While full antigenic testing is pending, based on genetic sequencing of some of the samples, these viruses are close to the H3N2 component of the 2011-2012 seasonal vaccine such that vaccination should offer protection against these viruses. Testing on the Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, (MRSA) isolates is ongoing, but preliminary results indicate that some of the MRSA isolates from Maryland are pulsed-field types USA300. Strains from the USA300 MRSA pulsed-field type can cause community MRSA infections including outbreaks of skin infections. In early March 2012, Maryland reported a cluster of severe respiratory illness in four adults in the same immediate family. Three of the four family members died. The state of Maryland reported that all four people were confirmed to be positive for seasonal influenza A (H3N2) infection by the state Laboratories Administration. MRSA bacterial co-infections are reported to have occurred in at least two of the four patients. More information about the cases in Maryland is available at http://www.dhmh.maryland.gov/publicrelat....Bacterial infections can occur as co-infections with influenza or occur after influenza infection. Staphylococcus aureus (staph) is one such bacterial co-infection. Concurrent infection (co-infection) with staph – which is what seems to have occurred in the cluster in Maryland – is a potentially catastrophic complication of influenza that can progress rapidly to serious illness and death. No formal surveillance is conducted for influenza with bacterial co-infections, however, these are well documented in the literature going back to the 1918 influenza pandemic. While not common, these co-infections have been reported in both children and adults. The best way to prevent influenza and its complications is an annual influenza vaccine. The United States is experiencing a late influenza season. Activity has only recently begun to increase and may continue for some time. This week’s FluView is reporting 15 states with widespread influenza activity and 5 states with high influenza-like-illness activity. Nationally, the percent of respiratory specimens testing positive for flu is 23 percent. People who have not gotten vaccinated yet this season should get vaccinated now. http://afludiary.blogspot.fr/

So it's worth giving the current flu shot a try. However there are reports that at least one family member had a current shot and died anyway.

http://www.recombinomics.com/News/031912....Curious CDC Comments On Maryland Death Cluster Recombinomics Commentary 22:30 March 19, 2012 Genetic sequencing has confirmed that this is a typical human seasonal H3N2 virus that is more than 99% similar to other H3N2 influenza viruses submitted by the state of Maryland this season. While full antigenic testing is pending, based on genetic sequencing of some of the samples, these viruses are close to the H3N2 component of the 2011-2012 seasonal vaccine such that vaccination should offer protection against these viruses. The above CDC comments on the H3N2 death cluster in Maryland are curious. The cluster was reported shortly after the CDC week 8 FluView revealed a dramatic spike in H3N2 low reactors. At the time the CDC had released 22 H3N2 sequences from samples collected in 2012, and none were designated as “low reactors”.

My 22 month old grandson was in the hospital for 2 weeks due to an intestinal blockage. Actually he was there for 5 days, then sent home only to return the next day and be in for another 7 days. Why it took them so long to treat him correctly is a whole nuther story. Anyway, I always worry about picking crap up in the hospital. He had to have an IV cause he couldn't eat or drink. He's been out for about 12 days now but runny nose started a few days ago and tonight a croupy type cough has started. My daughter said she heard him "whoop" a couple times and he is coughing in his sleep. I just asked her if he was running a fever but I think she went to bed.
We meet with a group of people on Friday nights and in the past month or so, one couple has had a bad bout with flu and now one other woman in our group is sick with the flu. She's been traveling alot.
Everyone in our group says that something nasty is still going around where they work.
Seems really late for people to still be struggling with flu.
I'm a little worried about my grandson, tho. What can you do for one that young. They don't give them cough meds anymore when they are that young.

I hope this link works. A Malibu restaurant worker was found dead outside of the restaurant where he works after not returning from taking the trash out. He was found in a pool of his own blood and the police thought he had been shot or beaten to death because of the volume of blood. Now it has been determined that he died from a respiratory infection. http://laist.com/2012/03/22/city_of_mali....

Scientists find gene that can make flu a killer
A genetic discovery could help explain why flu makes some people seriously ill or kills them, while others seem able to bat it away with little more than a few aches, coughs and sneezes.
In a study published in the journal Nature on Sunday, British and American researchers said they had found for the first time a human gene that influences how people respond to flu infections, making some people more susceptible than others. The finding helps explain why during the 2009/2010 pandemic of H1N1 or "swine flu", the vast majority of people infected had only mild symptoms, while others - many of them healthy young adults - got seriously ill and died. In future, the genetic discovery could help doctors screen patients to identify those more likely to be brought down by flu, allowing them to be selected for priority vaccination or preventative treatment during outbreaks, the researchers said. It could also help develop new vaccines or medicines against potentially more dangerous viruses such as bird flu. Paul Kellam of Britain's Sanger Institute, who co-led the study and presented the findings in a telephone briefing, said the gene, called ITFITM3, appeared to be a "crucial first line of defense" against flu. When IFITM3 was present in large quantities, the spread of the virus in lungs was hindered, he explained. But when IFITM3 levels were lower, the virus could replicate and spread more easily, causing more severe symptoms.
People who carried a particular variant of IFTIM3 were far more likely to be taken into hospital when they got flu than people who carried other variants, he added. "Our research is important for people who have this variant as we predict their immune defenses could be weakened to some virus infections," Kellam said. "Ultimately as we learn more about the genetics of susceptibility to viruses, then people can take informed precautions, such as vaccination to prevent infection." The potential antiviral role of IFITM3 in humans was first suggested in studies conducted by Abraham Brass of the Ragon Institute and Gastrointestinal Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States. Using genetic screening, he found that it blocked the growth of flu and other viruses in cells. Teams led by Brass and Kellam then took the work further by knocking out the IFITM3 gene in mice. They found that once these animals contracted flu they had far more severe symptoms than mice with the IFITM3 gene. In effect, they said, the loss of this single gene in mice can turn a mild case of influenza into a fatal infection. The researchers then sequenced the IFITM3 genes of 53 patients who had been hospitalized with seasonal or pandemic flu and found that a higher number of them had a particular variant of IFITM3 compared to the general patient population. The researchers believe this variant results in a shorter version of the protein or one that is less abundant in cells, leaving patients more vulnerable to flu when they get it. "Our efforts suggest that individuals and populations with less IFITM3 activity may be at increased risk during a pandemic, and that IFITM3 could be vital for defending human populations against other viruses such as avian influenza," said Brass.

I and a girlfriend have had the flu? for over 2 months now. I never got it bad, but if I tried to get up and do something strenuous the fever and sore throat would kick in. It just got cold and windy here and I step outside for 5 minutes without a hat and end up coughing and feverish until I lay down inside and warmed up. Very odd. I'm on methotrexate for RA so my immune system is a bit suppressed, but as long as I get good sleep and rest I'm fine - go off that and I start to get sick until I rest again.
The girlfriend had 3 weeks bad and now just a permanent little cough and slight sore throat.
