I am not certain that Fukushima is a greater disaster than Chernobyl, but it does pose a larger risk. That risk is that the spent fuel storage facilities located above the reactor cores, pose a huge risk and Tepco believes that leaving the spent fuel in these pools rather than in containment casks is best. Given the potential for further deterioration of the site, I cannot agree. However, I am far from an expert in such matters, but I offer this. There is spent nuclear fuel all over the place in this country - often in similar spent fuel pools. Each is a potential terrorist target. Each is subject to disruption by natural disasters. At the intentional risk of annoying my friends in Nevada, the concept of placing high level nuclear waste underground, in the desert, makes a hell of a lot more sense than storing it onsite at dozens of nuclear plants across the country. Basically, the risks would be more manageable. I am not anti-nuke, I am against being stupid with nuclear materials.
