I'm a little ambivalent posting this, but it's worth a shot. We have an open position in my team. The position is in the IT department supporting a 24/7 manufacturing facility.

This position requires the knowledge of at least one web applications development stack and the aptitude/desire to be able to transition without too much difficulty into others when needed. Primary technology is .NET/IIS/SQL Server, secondary is Apache/Java/Oracle.

Must have:
1. Advanced problem solving skills
2. Desire to learn new technologies, languages
3. Desire to work at a manufacturing facility. This isn't a cutesie start-up.
4. Ability to analyze needs of engineering and operations departments and propose best solutions in given environment.
5. Advanced task management skills.

Full time, salary position. Travel is about 0%. Excellent benefits (insurance, etc.). Team environment that works together to solve complex tasks.

The ideal candidate will probably have about 3-7 years experience, have very good knowledge of the entire stack of something in web applications development. If you can't already, you will be expected to develop into a pretty good systems engineer who can integrate various systems around the world. You don't need to know everything already, but you will be expected to learn it if required for a new responsibility or project. You don't have to have DBA skills, but you will have the opportunity to learn them. Your (small) team handles the applications development and system integration for an entire manufacturing facility and hundreds of engineers; the buck stops with you. It's challenging work, but you have a team supporting you who will help you out when you need it.

Sadly I'm in Boston and fairly tied here due to relations. I got everything on that list but the .Net. :-/ I'd love to get into manufacturing, too. I had an opportunity to bring a plastics group into the 21st century with just-in-time inventory control and some process QC/QA, but they went***** up last year. Oh well.

Good hunting!

Thanks. :) If you've ever worked for a large corporation before, you're aware of all the challenges here and everything that comes with that. But this position is a whale in the school of fish here, so there's a high level of responsibility and you can easily see the impact of your work around you.

Jotapay, one thing I've noticed, really great programmers rarely apply for jobs. They are recruited or poached.

Also, I would personally rely on a programmers github profile more than their resume if I was looking for an exceptional web developer.

Ironic, my github profile isn't public because I'm not ready for my code to be public.

Just my two cents.

Peter, I agree, good ideas. I'm outside of managing the hiring process though. I manage systems and do actual work, and others do the actual nuts and bolts hiring. It's a junior position for someone who is capable, but doesn't have to reinvent the internet just yet.

I've been approached by a lot of folks via the StackExchange careers site lately - perhaps you could explore that route?

Jota,

They should let you write the ads if you do not already. If I saw an ad written like that around my area (nyc) I would jump at it.
