Put duct tape over the usb port, super glue the battery in and slap an apple sticker on it and it would be awesome.

I'd rather have this than an Android.

If it's the same price as an iPad but has a full version of Windows and office standard then it's a much better value proposition for businesses.

Example: My client will have to completely rewrite the POS terminal for iPad (to help with full drive-thru's), but they tested the POS software (windows XP stuff) and found that it ran fine on these surfaces.

They WERE all "iPad everything". But since they've received these surface's they have decided to re-evaluate things.

If it's the same price with the same amount of memory as an iPad, no doubt I'd go with this over an iPad. No mention of price though....

The Pro version with "full" Windows 8 does not come with Office as standard - that's an additional cost. "Office RT" only comes standard on the ARM-based WinRT. The Pro version is gonna be pricy for sure given that you WILL want to buy the new Office 2013 for it (it is better suited to touch)

Saw a prototype of Surface about 5 years ago, and it was amazing then. Almost Star-Trek TNG-type technology.

Perhaps I missed it, but was there any mention when this might appear in store shelves?

Or, could this be similar to the Surface announcement Landshark mentioned, where we were shown really cool stuff with no follow-through with a real product.

Most corporate users already own office with annual maintenance. If the hardware price is comparable to the ipad it will be much more popular with corporate users.

The WinRT version is supposed to launch at about the same time as Win8 (I've heard as early as late September) with the Intel-base Pro arriving a couple of months later

Info is pretty sparse but here are a few pics: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en/us/d....

I'm slowly getting over my initial despair RE Win 8, btw.

The win8 version looks like what I wanted from an iPad in the first place.

I would think open office or something similar will run on it for free. I been watching youtubes and reading the tech sites on it and for the right price I will for sure buy it. I'd pay iPad money for it and I'd never pay iPad money for an iPad.

This looks really good to me. With the USB port and HDMI connector you could set up a docking station. An Ivy Bridge processor and Office apps and you've got a real PC that can disconnect and travel.

Like others, depending on the price I might be interested. I had a laptop once years ago but it was before wireless networking really took off and I hated unhooked a CAT5 cable if I wanted to move around the house at all but still be on my home network. No experience with tablets or current portable computing offerings these days, do they generate much/any heat?

Looks like the two versions vary a bit: The one with Windows RT weighs around 1.5 pounds, the other 2. The Windows RT model will have 32 and 64 GB versions, the other 64 and 128 GB. Slight difference in thickness as well.

Here are the rest of the available specs from the link that Mezcal posted:

My Lenovo generates little heat and is nice and quick -- i5 processor. It will get warm when it's "working", but for ordinary things like watching a movie or browsing, it's pretty-much idle.

~5 hour battery life in typical use as well, which is quite nice. You can easily suck that down into the 2-3 hour range though by hitting the CPU hard...

Yeah well show me what's NOT made in China when it comes to computers nowdays. I'd love a US-made machine that was ACTUALLY US-made. I couldn't find one (and no, final assembly is NOT "made")

Agreed, the iPad has some good apps but not enough to do my day job with or trade with without compromise, with these it might be possible.
