Report: State Dept. Considers Eliminating US Nuclear Arsenal

Although President Obama's current defense cuts are so drastic that even Rep. Nancy Pelosi is scared they might cost Democrats more seats in the House, State Dept. advisers are reportedly encouraging further cuts and even the all-out elimination of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

A State Dept. report addressing this issue justifies the suggestion on the grounds that possessing nuclear weapons drives other nations to "acquisition and/or use of nuclear weapons."

Right. Unilateral elimination of nukes... yeah that will end sooooooo well.

If collapse or breakup of the US is a real concern it might be a good idea to get rid of those before the event. Who would possess the weapons in the event of a state revolt? I'm looking at you Dakotas.

If you don't hold it you don't own it. Amirite?

They probably have stuff now that makes nukes look like sling shots: satellite beams that can kill every living thing instantly over hundreds of square miles, simply by causing dissolution of some essential protein. Maser weapons like something that pulverized steel in those big buildings. Gigaton nuclear warheads.

This old stuff might be getting too expensive to maintain and the new and improved planet busting technology can serve as sufficient deterrent.

Not to worry! Boz is working on more advanced Tin Foil Hat technology. In the meantime you can pick up one of these surplus. It'll give you protection from mind control positronic emissions even though it's a bit unwieldy.

If they can point to a tangible system that has the same power as a nuke, that renders nukes obsolete, then fine. Otherwise this is just yellow-belly, rollover mentality. Just think of how many countries would just love to settle an old score...

Maybe star wars really is complete/functional, and not just in this country.

I know I know. How well can any counter measure system handle 100s if not 1000s of incoming missiles?

Maybe be just a voter grab. You know the ones who think if the US gets rid of it's nukes, the rest of the world will magically follow?

How long did we have the SR-71 before the world knew about it ? I believe we have something up our sleeves ( cool toys ) but what they are who knows ?

Yup I could be wrong but if so WTF have we really been spending all those defense dollars on ?

Let's see. Civilian aircraft haven't materially changed since the 1960s. Standard combat hasn't changed much, just incremental improvements on tanks, rifles, communications and tactics really. I say the advances that we should be seeing are being hidden and the military is probably 40 to 50 years ahead of where we think it is.

Boz is right. We only know what they want us to see and even the Raptor cannot demonstrate full capability at airshows. There is likely some crazy stuff out there.

Because it'll kill the pilots. Sorry, if we had something better than Nukes the civil scientists would have a whiff of it.

Even if we have something better, it hasn't been demonstrated to the world. It was that demo back in 1945 that has kept everyone in line for lo these many years.
