For the Technical video bandwidth problem how about setting up a restricted bittorrent tracker? 3 TB/month sounds insanely expensive. People will need to install a torrent client though.

Please don't get mad, I've only been here a week. But in your blog entry you seem frustrated by the video bandwidth and the attitude of entitlement. Can I ask some dumb question(s)? What videos are you referring to? And why can't they be replaced by YouTube links? I'm guessing you allow users to upload videos, and you host them... but I haven't come across any yet.

I post technical analysis videos on a daily basis.

They are now available only to donors who have "gold" status.

YouTube was tried early on, and it has severe quality problems.

How long before accounts are updated to Gold after donation? Mine is in.

Any donation should result in an immediate email back to you telling you what's up.

Go to the control panel and hit "contrib". If its not there check your email - you got one back from the system telling you there was a data mismatch in email addresses and you need to reply to that.

If that fails, PM me here on the forum with the details (I need the email you PayPal'd from so I can find the payment) and I'll look for it manually and post it.

Transmission to us is pretty close to real-time from PayPal and we post it as soon as we get it. The gold update typically happens within 10-15 minutes of it hitting the server here; there's a timed job that updates the status of gold which is part of the timed run that generates notification emails.

I share the revulsion for the entitlement mentality. However there is a different aspect of health care that's worth considering, which is national competitiveness.

Think of injury and sickness as a tax levied by God on the living. Like all taxes, this tax impacts economic growth. What approach to health care will minimize this "external" tax while also minimizing the overall cost to national productivity? I am not convinced that a multitude of competing profit-oriented businesses will more efficiently protect US competitiveness than a single well-organized national approach. Especially when those businesses can effectively write legislation anyway (e.g. the drug-benefit law that denies the government the ability to negotiate drug prices).

I don't pretend to know the answer. But I believe that dismissing national health care solely on the basis of the ideology (which, again, I share) that the government should not foster or support an entitlement mentality may undercut US competitiveness in the long haul.

If you're going to go that route then you only spend on things that return more than they cost. This list is actually pretty short - if, for example, you smoke, the list is basically limited to accidents (e.g. car crash)

Down that road lies the end of care for the aged.

Good point KD, although the argument can be made that if the system (whether private or public) does not look after self-sabotaging or unproductive people then someone who IS sane and productive will. For example, a child forced to choose between starting a new business and keeping a steady job to support aging parents could choose the latter. So national productivity still suffers.

What happens to an aging smoking obese diabetic with no money and no children about whom nobody really cares? I honestly don't know. But this is I think a different question from whether a public or private system is more conducive to national competitiveness.
