Lessons of History was awesome.

Now on to A Beginners Guide to Short-Term Trading

What is needed is a poll on the top books, as recommended by TF'ers.

My vote goes to the already-mentioned Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. One important lesson from it is that money is a tool, not a goal. Know yourself well enough to know your risk tolerance and how you will use your profits.

Read Breaking News and trust your gut. Never trade more than you can afford to lose and you'll be OK.

As far as books - pick up To Kill A Mockingbird if you want to read a book. Or The Essential Calvin and Hobbes. smiley

I'm not a trader, but Alchemy of Finance by Soros was prescient. I'm currently reading Inventing Money - the Story of Long Term Capital Management, by Nicholas Dunbar. This is really helping me understand derivatives and how they came to be used, abused, and priced etc.

"Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" - First one I read about 3 years ago based on recommendations (obviously). Really good in that it reads well as a story and immerses you in the culture of traders/trading.

"A Beginner's Guide To Day Trading Online" - Another recommendation that was a good introduction to the technical side of things. Probably could skip it if you go to the next one in my list.

"Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets" - I'm halfway through this one (I only read it when I'm paying homage to Thomas "John" Crapper) and one of the telling things for me is that a lot of what I thought was "slang" being used around here are actually technical terms for T/A and it's helped me to better understand what's happening. Hasn't translated to the pocketbook yet but hopefully only a matter of time.

My 2 centavos.

Along with "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" I highly recommend

"Liar's Poker" by Michael Lewis - it really shows that most of the guys on Wall Street are full of it.

"The Meaning of Life" by David Friend. There are two volumes, the second of which is "More Reflections on the Meaning of Live." Best "read" (they're picture books) when listening to "Fantasia on a Theme" by Thomas Tallis. Also, Studs Terkel, "Working."

I am interested in reading up on two topics; various taxes and tax law in the U.S., and regulation for various financial topics/institutions.

Anyone know of the best way to read up on these topics? Are there good books or is my best bet to just read up on SEC/IRS websites...

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.
