They were rooting around looking for it this morning. I guess they didn't find it.

FedEx Corp. is looking for a missing shipment of radioactive rods used by hospitals to calibrate CT scanning equipment.

The rods were sent this week to Memphis, Tennessee, from Fargo, North Dakota, Sandra Munoz, a spokeswoman for the Memphis-based company, said today in a telephone interview. There’s no indication the rods were stolen, she said.

“There’s a distinct possibility they were misplaced either in our facility or even in the recipient’s facility,” Munoz said.

Three shipments of radioactive rods were sent, each in its own metal cylinder, known as a pig, which is about 10 inches long and weighs 20 pounds. Two of the containers arrived at their destination, which Munoz declined to identify.

“As long as no one attempts to open that pig, there’s no danger to the public,” she said.

I'll give 10:1 odds that this "radioactive rod" isn't dangerous in any way in terms of weapon making.

What's it made out of Ge-68?

By intentionally leaving out crucial details, the American citizenry is being terrorized by a "nuclear threat" that isn't a threat.

Almost certainly not BUT I bet it would make a nasty little dirty weapon - even if most of its impact would be the FEAR it would generate rather than the actual radiation poisoning and/or cancers.

What are the odds that TSA "finds" this rod on a domestic terrorist via patdown?

I found it, it was smashed between my cheese of the month box and my laptop from Amazon. Tastes like chicken.

Gen, I believe these are the types of calibration sources in question: http://technologyimaging.com/products/ca....

So you're only looking at the micro to low mili Curie range.

These aren't for generating the output radiation, but for simulating signal from the patient that the detector sees.

You could get hurt from holding such a rod, eating it, or being in the same room long term, but this is nowhere near powerful enough for a dirty bomb.

Well like I said Tally the issue isn't so much damage as it is FEAR.

You can bet that if someone fragmented one of those things and put it in an explosive device so that the rad detectors clicked (even if only somewhat) the FEAR reaction that would generate would be massive.

The actual RISK would be extremely low, but the point of terrorism isn't necessarily to do damage - it's to terrorize.

Yup, totally agree with you.

Incidentally, blowing up one of these rods releases approximately the same radiation as burning one contract of coal(1500tons). Different elements and half-lifes of course.

Well, you know where I work but, I don't care who you are, that's funny.smiley

At least it wasn't a box of bombs. Imagine a bomb going off in the Memphis hub, that would make the next four weeks a real party.

The lost FedEx packages that are much more concerning to me, are the infectious disease samples that are regularly shipped from lab to lab.

I'll bet it's REAL fun to go to the hub today! I can just see it...TSA style groping looking for the rods..."Is that a radioactive rod in your pocket or are you just happy to see me".

Funny thing is that such a dirty bomb would cause a lot of fear, but would be a drop in the ocean compared to the radiation and unnecessary deaths from X-Rays, CT Scans and now the TSA "compliance portals". So, more radiation is more safety, you see?
