I would love to see Andrea Rossi’s energy catalyzer shown to be real. However there has been no evidence to show otherwise. And by evidence I mean a repeatable experiment with repeatable results from an institution such as UC Berkley or MIT.

As Carl Sagan said "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence".

The test is happening now.

Quote:
Update from Sterling around 1:30pm GMTI just got back from my turn. I was able to shoot a few pictures and take some video. The reason for the embargo on taking photos was personnel reasons. They don't want the engineers and testers to be shown, to keep them confidential. The company doing the testing does not wish to be known at this time. A quick comment from the AP writer who is here. The lack of coverage from the mainstream media is not due to lack of interest but from the lack of cooperation from Andrea Rossi. He has turned a lot of media away who have wanted to come in. The AP writer has gained Rossi's trust over time, and hence was invited to be here today.Rossi will be sending us all the data this evening.Wish I could say more, but it will have to wait. Great day so far.

looks like a press embargo until midnight GMT (4 or 5 hours from now) with AP news having exclusivity.

WE SARTED REGULARLY THE TEST THIS MORNING . EVERYTHING IS GOING WELL SO FAR. THE 1 MW E-CAT IS WORKING IN SELF SUSTAINING.
TONIGHT I WILL PUBLISH THE NON SECRET REPORT THAT THE CUSTOMER WILL RELEASE.
WARM REGARDS, I HAVE TO RETURN TO THE PLANT. SORRY, I CANNOT ANSWER TO THE MANY COMMENTS I AM RECEIVING. I WILL PUBLISH THEM PROBABLY I WILL NEVER FIND THE TIME TO ANSWER.
WARMEST REGARDS TO ALL,
ANDREA ROSSI

or... the simple explanation... the company that is putting money on the line wants to see the results before they associate themselves with it. hence not identifying themselves, and not wanting their own team to be photographed.

I hope you are right, Dj.

Everybody (except a few Arab oil sheikhs) would like to see cold fusion work but I am very skeptical of their competence and credibility.

I am skeptical of exactly how Rossi is doing what he is doing, but I do not doubt that he has found a company that wishes to be anonymous for now, and that they are undoubtedly doing their own calculations based on the results.

While everyone would like to see cold fusion work, the company that ponies up the initial $$$ will surely do their own due diligence, right?

I also suspect a full report from AP news tomorrow, since they supposedly have exclusivity.

the speculation is that a big name USA tech corporation is the intended buyer, and that AP flew out one of their NYC tech reporters ( http://twitter.com/#!/petersvensson ) to cover it, so that they can uplink and broadcast to the american audience without translation issues

all speculation at this point, as it is a private test for the company (whoever it is).

Love to see this work and give a big finger to the Middle East. If it wasn't a hoax there probably is enough tech there to really bail out Greece.

What makes you believe that? What strikes me as remarkable about this is that it appears to be quite low tech.

IF this were to be demonstrated as a feasible system, I would think that legal niceties such as patents, etc. would not be able to stop many companies or nations from appropriating the tech for their own benefit. For example, many countries have taken the attitude that patents don't apply when they feel they have a need for medicines and their doing so was unable to be stopped - the fact that this was made retroactively legal by many pharma companies giving them licenses for free or close to free after these countries initiated production on their own was, IMO, just a means for those companies to get at least some PR benefit since they sure weren't getting any monetary returns from those countries for their medicines. Even here in the US, there have been reports that the gov't has cited national interest for expropriating inventions for exclusive DoD use, thus depriving some inventors of the opportunity to cash in in the open market.

I would think that these examples would be repeated if this were to actually pan out. Sure, the inventors and original developers would become rich, but I doubt that Greece itself would be able to retain a significant share of the benefits of this technology as it spread over the world.

Cold fusion is not exactly a perpetual motion machine but it is close enough for government work!

We'll it looks like they got 1/2 mW under some sort of controlled conditions. If this investor is really doing serious Due Diligence and is happy with the results then my friends we are seeing the dawn of a new age in energy production.

I want to see more proof, but today was a good start.

VC's (at least the good ones) in my experience are ruthless in investigating their return. If it's a fake, it hold together much longer.

Yeah, the customer did purchase the E-cat so at the very least the buyer saw enough proof.

http://pesn.com/2011/10/28/9501940_1_MW_....

Quote:
There were some issues, so it couldn't be run at full power in self-looped mode, but what it did do was plenty impressive.

It ran for 5.5 hours producing 470 kW, while in self-looped mode. That means no substantial external energy was required to make it run, because it kept itself running, even while producing an excess of nearly half a megawatt. Rossi explained the reasons for this in the presentation he gave, which I videotaped and will be posting later.

That's half the rated capacity, but it is still a major accomplishment for the device that was completed earlier this week -- the first of its kind on the planet.

Early in the day with a glitch showing up, Rossi said that they had to make a decision about whether to go for 1 MW output, not in self-sustain mode, or with self-sustain mode at a lower power level. The customer opted to go for the self-sustain mode. Nothing was said about the prospects of a follow-up test, though I would imagine that the customer will be running many tests to understand this gadget they have purchased, and that information will be conveyed to Rossi.

Quote:
Attendance at this test was limited for several reasons. First, the customer does not wish to be known at this time, nor to have its test engineers/scientists identified. I did not inadvertently discover the customer's identify, nor did I try to find out. I gave that group their space and did not probe. Second, the device is a nuclear device, and the regulations for a public demonstration are extremely stringent; so by making the event private, and only bringing one or two at a time to see it was a way to get around the safety requirements.

Most of us (around 30 guests total) arrived between 9 and 10 am; and by around 11 am, Rossi began taking people back to see the device while it was in operation, in self-sustained mode.

another journalist who was there as well:
http://www.nyteknik.se/nyheter/energi_mi....

Quote:
According to the customer’s controller, Domenico Fioravanti, the plant released 2,635 kWh during five and a half hours of self sustained mode, which is equivalent to an average power of 479 kilowatts – just under half the promised power of one megawatt.

Rossi explained this with the customer’s priority to achieve self sustained mode, which supposedly makes the process more difficult to control than when electrical power is supplied to support the reaction.

“We had to decrease the power during self sustained mode as the temperature rose too much”, Rossi said after the test.

Quote:
It remains unclear who the customer is. Rossi has only indicated that it belongs to a particular category of organizations. One possibility is that it’s a military organization given that the title of the controller Fioravanti in the report is “colonel”, however, scored out with a pen.

Rossi stated that an agreed contract research at the University of Bologna can now be initiated and that discussions on collaboration with Uppsala University can get started.

There’s still no clear indication of when a test performed by independent experts can be done, although this is still what both readers of Ny Teknik and most experts Ny Teknik has spoken to demand.

Interesting to note:

Peter Svensson from the AP was there (as rumored).

Peter was going to go first, having been given an exclusive by Rossi, but it's going to be a few days before he gets the necessary info and editorial approvals before he's able to run a story in the Associated Press.
