Female genital cutting is a pre-Islamic, mainly African, practice which was mentioned in relation to Egypt as early as 163BC -

The Egyptians seem to have been among the earliest practitioners of male circumcision, too.

It's not practiced in most of the Arab and Islamic world, and is not required by Islamic law. Many Islamic scholars have condemned it.

Rarnopp, what they do to little girls over there isn't 'circumcision'. It's equivalent to cutting the dicks off little boys.

I'm well aware of that, which is why I used the term "female genital cutting".

It's disgusting, but I was simply making the point that it isn't a specifically Islamic practice (even though many of those who practice it probably imagine that it is). It has deep and ancient roots in Egypt, and the deeply conservative nature of Egyptian society means that eradicating it will be a long haul.

Al-Jazeera is reporting that Gaddafi has fled to Venezuela.


They are also reporting that his wife has fled to Germany, and that his sons are shooting at each other inside of one of his palaces.

The military has confirmed this some of this, and the police are no longer patrolling the streets in Tripoli.

If the opposition is actually successful in bringing down Gaddafi, the third regime in as many months, the Genie is truly out of the bottle throughout the entire Middle East.

Three long term multi-decade dictatorships collapsing in weeks like so many house of cards. The motivation for mass movements by entire societies and populations to make their move now is rapidly becoming irresistible because of perceived likelihood that their goals appear very attainable and QUICKLY at that.

This is fast becoming a vast scenario of unintended consequences for the entire world and it's social/political and economic foundations. I believe the rubicon may have been already crossed and any number of blow-back crisises are now on the radar for the United States and it's near future economic outlook. Our own house of economic cards may get blown over and soon if energy costs and interest/risk rates are forced into extremes by what is happening there.

Basically telling the Libyan people to stop protesting or else, in the near future, there will be 15 fundamentalist states where Libya used to be...
