But that seems to be the recurring theme thru all of these revolution threads beginning with Egypt. The arm chair generals are chomping at the bit for our involvement so that we can exercise our military muscles. (I can feel the tension building, the excitement)

It starts with the compassion gene and goes from there, which is where taxpayers money always starts, the little stream in the mountains which ends up being a flood of taxpayers money at the delta to "cure" the problem.

For those that claim they are libertarians, look upon this crap with dispassion before you fall into the "compassion" trap.

We shouldn't be involved in this region at all. We should have fixed our energy problem decades ago.

Hmm, Guy did you read my whole post? I said let the Libyan citizens fight their own revolution. Liberty is at the root of libertarianism. I'd like to help people who have demonstrated the willingness to fight and die for their liberty actually achieve it. Do I wanna see a US occupation of Libya and a nation building exercise, absolutely not. Do I wanna see the planes and choppers that are shredding civilians get blown out of the sky by our carriers in the Med, or by the Italians? **** yeah I do.

Tally:
Let the Ital's handle it.
It's their back yard, not ours.
The US needs to stop sticking it's nose into everything that happens in the world. There are reasons the US is almost universally despised in the ME, and that is a huge part of it.
Let someone else, with a higher vested interest in Libya get the egg on their face for a change.

That's my humble opinion anyway, YMMV.

Phantomace, I'm with ya. I'd like to bring the troops home as well, but there has to be an exit strategy. I'm afraid though US will intervene to save oil fields, not people, and that will make it obvious that US is behaving as imperialists, not as a beacon for liberty and representative govt.

What else does Libya export other than oil? What all do they import?

This would definitely lead to US boots on the ground. Libertarian or not it will be done in the interest of national security.

Tallystick, look at a map of Libya. Look at their eastern border. Egypt. 220 F-16s. If they're not 'taking care of business', why should infidels get involved???

Unless someone here's a jarhead who's going to be one of the first hitting the beach of Tripoli, stop trying to put my brothers at arms in harm's way. It's ******ned easy to send troops to ****holes like Libya when your ass and your family's asses aren't on the line. Putting troops in harm's way isn't some ******ned video game where you can reset it and start over again. Here's a pic here as food for thought (not grotesque, but it's a dead Somali soldier being drug through the streets): http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/mar....

I'm the USA. I've got a metric ****ton of problems. Libya is WAY down my list. It's time for someone else to carry some of the load.

IFJ, maybe the rumors about egypt making a play for Libya will have more credit to them in the near future, as the military there is in control, they cannot be too happy about what is going on with their neighbors right now.

I don't want to send in troops, I'm wanting people like you to knock down some F1 Phantoms and low tech choppers. That's like a sniper vs a kid with a bb gun. I agree sending in ground troops is a very bad idea. Eygpt interfering would start a border oil war I'd think.

Italians are the ones that oughta step up. If they don't they might end up with a hell of a lot more refugees than otherwise.

Tallystick, it's NEVER that easy. There are a lot of peripheral issues to make that happen that you aren't aware of. Again, 220 F-16s in Egypt. NOT in our lane. This is the kind of thinking that got a whole lotta US troops killed in Somalia.
Let me throw out one simple countermove by the Libyans - they level the US Embassy in Tripoli, killing everyone on the compound. Oops.

If any experts want to perform brain surgery on someone after watching an operation on the medical channel, have at it. That would only leave one mort. That'd leave a whole lot less damage than making military decisions without thinking it through.

Yeah Dakine, it's all-volunteer. You and I have both seen a lot of brain dead stuff in our careers but there's no need to propogate ideas that war is a surgical endeavor with zero collateral damage. I worked for too many 20 pound brain morons who thought that we could prosecute a war without unintentional noncombatant casualties.
This is the kind of thinking that has us stuck in Iraq and Afghanistan. And I have a whole lot less issues with Iraq than Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Barack Rainman Oblabla and his brain dead Ivy League trust is so ****ed up that they think that Afghanistan's a good idea but Iraq is not. Midvale School for the Gifted in real life.

Tallystick - Yes I read your whole post. Its unbelievably shortsighted to think that its our job to traipse in, do a whole lot of damage and pat ourselves on the back. Invariably they will shoot down something and guess what, we'll need revenge which means more involvement. Silly Tally, been there, done that and forgotten again.

Antediluvian said, "This would definitely lead to US boots on the ground. Libertarian or not it will be done in the interest of national security."

Oh? You are saying we'll use it as an excuse to get involved? It doesn't have anything to do with national security because the Primary Dealers have been jacking up the price of oil through the exchanges. Its not our country, NOT OUR PROPERTY, but you think we'll use that as an excuse to launch ourselves into the middle of something that's not our problem?

Our problem is dependency on oil. Libya did not cause that. WE DID.

Look Guy, I'm not saying that's what should happen or that it's not morally reprehensible but that has never stopped us before.

There is no way we wouldn't send special ops or otherwise to secure those pipelines. It will be seen as an "opportunity" to secure the area."...it's the Primary Dealers jacking up the price..." When have we ever dealt with reality when sending troops somewhere. I guess we really thought there were WMD in Iraq.

We'll see. That's all I'm saying.
