Where would be the best place to get foreign physical currency in the US without getting jacked on a ridiculous spread?

Thinking of taking a small position in some other currencies just as a hedge, CHF CAD, etc

good luck with that.....the last few trips I took to Europe I actually ended up getting the best rates taking my dollars into the local bank once I arrived....the swiss Frank was the most dramatic of the decreased spread costs.

You can try your local bank....or even call the local Airport exchange????

Pretty much any bank can order foreign currency for you, but it will take a while and the exchange rate won't be particularly favorable.

I actually did this. My main credit union couldn't or wouldn't do it, but a secondary credit union ordered the CHF for me. This was quite a while ago, and they even asked If I wanted more. I declined the offer for "more" and I kept the amount under what I thought that they might be required to report or track.

Just open an account with Dukascopy and exchange currency that way. If the feces hits the rotating oscillator, hop on a jet to Zurich and get your money.

Uh, an account with a bank which requires one to fly to overseas to cash out is hardly the same as having physical currency in one's possession.

If you intend to try to leave the country with it if TSHTF you're better off if it's there rather than here. Remember the rules on declaring large currency amounts in your possession, right? Oh, and if you don't and get caught? Why it's deemed drug money!

KD already mentioned one problem with trying to bring Swiss Francs out of the country. Another is that your local Walmart isn't going to accept Swiss Francs, nor is anyone going to exchange them back to USD for a reasonable rate.

Hopping on a jet and leaving the country isn't that expensive anymore. And if things get bad here in the US, there will be somewhere in the world that's more stable. Having traveled the world, leaving the US for an extended period of time doesn't scare me.

This wouldn't be physical but you can get foreign currency exposure by opening an account at Everbank.com....
https://www.everbank.com/personal/foreig....

They have some unusual banking products....Awhile back I bought a 3 year BRIC CD....and this past year I bought a 5 year 10 Commodities IRA CD....

Daily I wonder what will happen next....

It doesn't scare me either, but the question is: If TSHF in the US, will commercial flights be available? As we saw 10 years ago, our government can shut down commercial air travel in a matter of a few hours. Even if it doesn't get shut it down by edict, let's say Bucky totally collapses. I know this isn't a popular scenario here, but that's exactly the scenario one would be hedging against by holding some physical foreign currency, right? Under those circumstances, whatever USD you have wouldn't be worth squat, but a foreign airline might accept the currency of its home country for tickets. Hence having at least some physical foreign currency might not be a bad move.

Depending on the SHTF, air space may or may not be available.

See SCATANA for more info.

Wow. What kind of SHTF scenario are you guys dreaming up? Commercial transport didn't shut down during the Great Depression. They're not going to shut things down for a solely economic event.
You're going more into a TEOTWAWKI scenario, complete with mushroom clouds.
