The dollar? Puh-lease.

Rochdale banking analyst Richard Bove reckons the search is on to find a new global safe haven. Because even if this US debt debacle gets sorted by lifting the ceiling, the cat’s out of the bag when it comes to the country’s place in the global financial system. Things are really about to change

I'm thinking a Latin American banana republic. A country with some natural resource that has commodity value and one that has a weak bank system with not much commerce with Europe and US.

Colombia?, Peru?, Uruguay?

That would be Cuba. LOL.

Add JPY to that list of safe haven plays.

Both the Swiss and Japanese central banks have made moves the last couple of days to stop/slow/reverse the capital inflows into their currencies.

that's funny.

brasil, maybe, in another 20 years could be part of a basket -- if they don't screw it up in the meantime.

uruguay? most likely, never. the float is so small it's MASSIVELY manipulated by the government -- they talk openly about it, and they have no natural resources to speak of, other than cattle, and some sparkly crystals that new agers like. :-)

uruguay is so small that when argentina sneezes, they get pneumonia -- see 2002.

I think that anyone believing there is a place safer then the U.S. is kidding themselves. It may be bad here but it will/could be even worse there.

Just what I want to do : access my money on a Tuesday nite from a Brazilian bank 3000 miles away. In a producing country that will have demand crushed and their 'economic miracle' economies floundering when it gets really bad in the ****ty old U.S.

Good plan. Right up there with the goofballs wanting to protect their money by transferring it to an island nation where 10 guys with bow and arrows might just change the government.

Just my opinion but there will be no better place then here until proven wrong. In the uncertain future you might be right but that aint now.

I'm currently in Brazil visiting family. My dollar used to buy a lot here, but now it's crap.

I wasnt necessarily speaking just about Brazil but rather almost anywhere in the world. Brazil was just a convenient example. I would fear what would happen there if TSHTF.

It might be real bad.

I'd rather be here.

r8r,

I see your location is Uruguay.

Why are you there then? Is it the aspect of freedom? Is it just a nice place to be? What is it that you like about Uruguay?

A good friend of mine is in MV at this time as he moves through the process of obtaining permanent resident status there. Apparently, they are tightening down a bit more on the physical residence requirements there.

Which asset doesn't directly impact any country with a painful appreciation of local currency or increased industrial cost of manufacturing?

Answer that question correctly, and you will know what to do.

Cupronickel-alloy nickels are safe-haven coins.

The current metal value of 1946-2011 U.S. Mint nickels is "$0.0622098" or 124.41% of face value, according to the "United States Circulating Coinage Intrinsic Value Table" at http://coinflation.com/ .

The law against melting them will not be in place forever.
