I am a tad dumbfounded - this is just not NYC. There are areas of massive property damage across multiple states here, and it's still coming in.

Weather Channel's Jim Cantore would agree with you. On the NBC news tonight, he said it will be 24 hours until we know the full extent of the damage.

I'm not suggesting Irene is in anyway comparable to Katrina, but remember, everyone thought New Orleans dodged a bullet until the levies gave way the next morning. Flooding in particular, is probably under reported at this point...and effects will not be fully manifested until swollen rivers crest.

The Ramapo and the Passaic are expected to crest more than a foot above their '84 and '99 records. People who've been flooded before will be ruined. Folk's who've NEVER been flooded will flood if those estimates are correct. The expense will be massive.

Perfect Storm of Hype: Politicians, the media and the Hurricane Irene apocalypse that never was
By Toby Harnden World Last updated: August 28th, 2011

For the television reporter, clad in his red cagoule emblazoned with the CNN logo, it was a dramatic on-air moment, broadcasting live from Long Island, New York during a hurricane that also threatened Manhattan. “We are in, right, now…the right eye wall, no doubt about that…there you see the surf,” he said breathlessly. “That tells a story right there.”

Stumbling and apparently buffeted by ferocious gusts, he took shelter next to a building. “This is our protection from the wind,” he explained. “It’s been truly remarkable to watch the power of the ocean here.”

The surf may have told a story but so too did the sight behind the reporter of people chatting and ambling along the sea front and just goofing around. There was a man in a t-shirt, a woman waving her arms and then walking backwards. Then someone on a bicycle glided past.... more at link

Is Philadelphia in the same situation? They had a lot of rain on top of A LOT of rain.

There were some pretty dramatic pictures of the Schulkill this morning. River hasn't crested yet, though. Tuesday morning's papers should be definitive.

Hurricane Irene spells more bad news for East Coast homeowners
Experts say the storm could delay pending homes sales and, in the longer-term, potentially depress home values

As homeowners along the Eastern seaboard assess the damage done by Hurricane Irene, they may have to brace themselves for more bad news.

The hurricane is likely to roil an already uncertain real estate market in communities from North Carolina to Vermont, where residents have already seen their homes severely damaged or even destroyed.

Experts say the storm could delay pending homes sales and, in the longer-term, potentially depress home values. For homeowners teetering on the brink of foreclosure, the devastation caused by Irene could be a deciding factor in losing their homes. Insurers say total damages from the storm could be between $7 and $10 billion, according to published reports.
