The Revolutionary Guard said the accidental explosion occurred while military personnel were transporting munitions.

It doesn't appear to be foreign spec-ops based on this statement, but interesting nevertheless.

Yeah, isn't that the third or fourth "munitions dump accident" we've read about in the last month?

Less than two weeks after a mysterious explosion destroyed an Iranian missile base near Tehran, the Islamic Republic's official news agency FARS reported Tuesday that a loud blast was heard in the city of Isfahan at 2:40 pm local time, but later removed the report.

According to the initial report, search and rescue teams called to the scene confirmed the blast, but reported no injuries.

Iran's uranium enrichment plant is located just outside Isfahan – one of Iran's largest cities.

The report also stated that a security official confirmed that the explosion had occurred, but refused to give further details.

I am willing to be a lot of their munitions are leftovers from the Cold War. Even newly purchased from the Russians, it is likely old surplus.

Old munitions, well, get old.

Handle with extreme care.

Precisely how many munitions accidents can you have at missile bases and nuclear facilities within weeks of each other?

The odds must be astronomical.

Maybe, but it depends on what they are currently doing. If they have a flawed loading/handling procedure or a "bad lot" of something, it could well cause a cluster of problems. Many countries had similar episodes from time to time.

Skullduggery is certainly a possibility, but the fact remains that mucking about with large missiles (and/or munitions), is a really freaking dangerous line of work. And the untimely vaporization of witnesses can make problems hard to troubleshoot.

This is especially true if a program is in it's early days, involves new stuff, or is being rushed. I suspect all three things are happening.

I think Paulson and Bernanke knew early on that Wile E. Coyote had already run straight off the cliff, so they chose to focus on frantic efforts to slow his descent before J6P notices the "gravity" of what has happened, hoping that the proles won't panic telegenically on the way down.

A top Iranian official has rejected media reports about an explosion being heard in the central city of Isfahan.

Mohammad-Mehdi Ismaili, Isfahan governor's political and security deputy, said on Monday that report was completely baseless and fabricated, IRNA reported.

It was in the Gulf News here before the IRG called foul. I say its real.

Besides, if you saw how Iranians loaded the boats they take from the ports to Iran full of tires, cars, food, refrigerators, etc., you would realize that logistics and material handling is probably not one of their stronger points.

They are rushing to get something ready. It's causing the marginal safety procedures they already had in place to degrade.

As noted in a different thread: Iran may feel they are in a "use it or lose it" situation.

Yeah, possibly a case of readying old weapons for use before testing the various sub-systems to ensure they are still functional.

The Times reported on Wednesday that the mysterious explosion that rocked the city of Isfahan two days ago struck the uranium conversion facility located just outside Iran's third-largest city. According to the British newspaper, satellite images clearly show billowing smoke and destruction, despite Iran's claim that no such blast had taken place.

The Times quoted Israeli intelligence officials as saying there was "no doubt" that the blast struck the nuclear facilities at Isfahan and that it was "no accident."
