Meet Greece's new finance minister Quote:

http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_art....
Yiannis Stournaras, appointed by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Tuesday as Greece’s new finance chief following the resignation on Monday of National Bank of Greece Governor Vassilis Rapanos on health grounds, is the general director of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), the country’s foremost economic think-tank. He was also development minister in Greece's caretaker government between the May 6 and June 17 general elections.
Born in Athens in 1956, Stournaras is a graduate of the University of Athens, where he is still a professor, and received his masters’ degree in economic theory and policy from Oxford University, where he was a research fellow and lecturer from 1982-1986.
He has worked as special adviser to the Finance Ministry from 1986-1989 and from 1994-2000, as well as to the Bank of Greece from 1989-1994. He participated in the design of macroeconomic and structural policy in the runup to Greece’s accession to the European Monetary Union, representing the Ministry of Economy and Finance at the Monetary Committee (now Economic and Financial Committee) of the European Union. He was responsible for the consultations with international organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Gunmen ram van into Microsoft's Greek headquarters in Athens, set vehicle on fire ATHENS - Gunmen rammed a van packed with gas canisters into Microsoft's Greek headquarters in Athens and then set the vehicle on fire, causing damage but no injuries, police said on Wednesday. At least two people wielding pistols and a machine gun kept security guards away as they carried out the attack at about 3:45 a.m. local time on Wednesday (9:45 p.m. ET Tuesday), police said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Authorities said no warning call had been made before the incident. Arson attacks against banks, foreign firms and local politicians have become more frequent in Greece in recent years as the country battles soaring unemployment and struggles through a recession deepened by austerity policies imposed by foreign lenders. http://worldnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/201....

Scientific director of the GSEE-ADEDY Institute of Labour professor Savas Robolis sees unemployment climbing at 24% in 2012.
As he stated at radio station "Vima 99.5", this year the unemployed are expected to exceed 1,200,000, and calculating the non-registered unemployed that amount to 6% he estimated they will reach 1,400,000, leading unemployment to exceed 24% for 2012.
According to Robolis, the real available income of employees, what is left after taxes and cuts in wages, decreased at 50% since 2009.
He also said that unitary labour costs have been reduced by 8% in the last two years and that the memorandum provides for an additional reduction of 15% for the 2012-2014 biennium.

Greece received the remaining one billion euro portion of its latest bailout tranche which will provide some comfort to cash strapped state coffers, a senior government official said on Monday.
The disbursement came from the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the euro zone΄s temporary bailout fund, as was agreed on by finance ministers in May, Reuters reported.
"We received one billion euros and out of this we have already paid 450 million to the EFSF," the official said on condition of anonymity.

French banking group Societe Generale, which controls local lender Geniki Bank, is examining ways of disengaging itself from its investment in Greece.
According to a Reuters report on Thursday, the group’s chief financial officer, Bertrand Badre, suggested that Societe Generale has cut its funding line to its Greek subsidiary close to zero and is studying possible exit strategies.
The management of both Societe Generale and French rival Credit Agricole, owner of Greece’s Emporiki Bank, have come under fire at home for buying into the Greek credit sector. There is widespread worry regarding the consequences of a possible “Greek accident” for the parent groups...

The Finance Ministry has been unable to collect court-ordered tax fines totaling 12.6 billion euros, or 6.2 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, according to data posted on Thursday on the website of the ministry’s General Secretariat of Information Systems.
The court orders came about after the taxpayers concerned disputed the fines imposed by the tax monitoring mechanism. However, partly due to being understaffed as a result of the voluntary exit program and retirements, as well as to the absence of electronic applications, the tax collection mechanism has only managed to collect 630 million euros, that is just 4.77 percent of the total sum of 13.2 billion....

It's a damn shame about those "Turnings" - the reasons we cycle through history are varied, but it seems to me mainly that there's no one left alive to truly explain what happened the last time. My bitter old German grandmother is still kicking, but even if I spent the time asking if this slow-motion cluster**** feels the same, she wouldn't really know. Born in 1920, she'd have been 9 or 10 the last time - not exactly someone who would've paid attention or understood the macro version of things. Damn shame, too. We're not back to saving every useful/less container and reusing aluminum (tin) foil yet, but I can see it in my future.

Quote:The euro zone ministers also had a first discussion with new Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras but made no decision on any change in Athens' draconian austerity programme, which is off track following June 17 elections.
Juncker said arrangements would be made to ensure a Greek debt repayment due in August did not plunge the country into bankruptcy.
"We will find solutions for August. There's no reason to worry about August," he said without elaborating. http://www.cnbc.com/id/48116689

Business Insider--The new Greek finance minister, Yannis Stournaras, until recently a professor of economics at the University of Athens, hasn’t learned yet the art of extortion that is required to accomplish anything at all during negotiations with the Eurozone. So, when he went to the meeting of Eurozone finance ministers earlier this week at the Eurogroup—which serves as political control over the common currency—he accomplished absolutely nothing. He wasn’t even able, unlike his predecessors, to get himself into the media with some wild threat about a “disorderly default” or destroying the entire Eurozone if he didn’t get what he wanted. He had two big jobs to do: one, promote Greece’s efforts to renegotiate (“water down” is the technical term) the structural reforms that the prior government had agreed to in writing by signing the bailout memorandum; and two, push for a two-year delay of these watered-down conditions. At the same time, he’d have to make sure Greece would continue to receive the flow of bailout billions from taxpayers elsewhere. But roundly ignored at the Eurogroup meeting, he returned empty handed to Greece. A fiasco for him. In a meeting with leaders of the three-party coalition government—the conservative New Democracy, the socialist PASOK, and the Democratic Left— Evangelos Venizelos, PASOK leader, former finance minister, and extortionist par excellence, was apparently furious with him and hollowed out his power. The infighting begins. http://www.businessinsider.com/greece-fl....

From Zara's link Quote:Apparently, it was even worse. Elements of their preliminary report due by the end of July seeped out: it painted an “awful picture”; of the 300 specific measures to be implemented by now, 210 were completely ignored and left by the wayside. This is the report that the Troika will use in deciding whether or not to send the next bailout tranche to Greece. And without this money, Greece will have to default and most likely exit the Eurozone. I suppose Junker can fix these 210 issues and others by August - LOL!

Better yet... cough up the money and watch the entire 300 specific measures next time be ignored.
