They managed to keep the increase slow this to prevent OMGWTF syndrome. Check the gas/electricity thread. I don't see high gas prices having as big an impact as it did in 2008. And how do you square that claim with the also reported fact that US vehicles on the road are an average 10 years old...10 years ago almost 50% of vehicle sales were light trucks probably averaging at best 14 MPG. I highly, highly disagree with the notion that high gas prices are "priced in". We as a country are in much worse shape in 2012 than we were in 2008 - less savings, more people on disability-food-stamps-unemployed-medicaid, food and med. insurance up at least 20% for most, etc etc. There is no fallback position for a lot of people. Any hurricane (and there haven't been any last couple of years) with the likes of Ivan or Katrina damaging refineries could put gasoline above $5 a gallon/$6 diesel across the country. 2012-02-20 08:17:15 Permalink
