In violation of a 2009 UN resolution... The US food aid deal is off...because it's not gonna be canceled... it's in honor of Kim Il Sung 100 years anniversary...

Quote:
Dan Pinkston, a Seoul-based security expert, says that US-DPRK food deal becomes "politically impossible" with today's announcement.

N. Korea says will launch earth observation satellite in April

North Korea said Friday it will launch an earth observation satellite aboard a long-range rocket next month, a move expected to spark international condemnation because the launch is seen as little different from a missile test.

North Korea will go back to rhetoric... and they are crazy enough to stage another provocation with all that's going on.

Cue North Korean outrage... there's no way they cancel this... and if it's intercepted by Japan/US/South Korea... big chances that at least a provocation will happen... if not outright war.

This satellite is in honor of Kim Il Sung... so for them, it's serious business.

Gates : all of it? Anyway it's not much technology... Iran at this point is more advanced than NKorea in missile tech.

Vitch, my guess is that the Norks and Iranians are best friends in that regard - trading missile tech for nuke tech. Both win. Everyone else loses.

Is there a reason their rockets have to be launched eastward? Can they launch them over China instead of Japan?

If you're launching a satellite for communications you want to launch eastward due to the rotation of the earth; the difference is roughly 800mph!

The exception is polar-transit satellites; those are usually launched northward.

Japan may shoot down North Korean rocket

JAPAN is considering shooting down the rocket North Korea has threatened it will launch next month if the missile, or parts of it, falls into Japanese territory.

That would probably mean war. Not that North Korea can do much against Japan... maybe launch a few missiles at Japan... but it would take time to fuel them... and then the US-SK would have to strike them on the ground... which would mean a US-SK-Jp vs NKorea war.

Hopefully the missile fails early and doesn't fall on SKorea or Japan or anyone or follows the correct trajectory... it would be a first since NKorea long range missile technology is BS... we'll see if Iran gave them good information..

S.Korea, US to Recover Debris of NK Rocket

The first stage of the Kwangmyongsong-3 is expected to fall into South Korean waters, 140 kilometers off the west Byeonsan Peninsula in the Yellow Sea.

The defense ministry also decided to make thorough preparations against potential military provocations or a nuclear test by the North after the rocket launch.

Pretty sure if the launch is going to be dropping stages in the Yellow Sea then Japan doesn't have anything to worry about.

http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html....

Quote:

The first stage of the rocket will drop around 450 km from a launch pad in Tongchang-ri, North Pyongan Province, and the second one will drop somewhere about 3,000 km away.

The third stage is expected to carry the payload for another 1,000 km using its own booster rockets. The waters where the first stage will fall are on the open sea and neither North Korean nor Chinese territorial waters. The closest coast is China's Weihai on the eastern tip of the Shandong Peninsula around 250 km away.

JT, I thought it was being launched EAST.... the Yellow Sea appears to be WEST.

If I'm way off base here, correct me - I'm not saying I'm right, I'm just noting the obvious.

From what I can tell they're launching slightly southwest. Based on where the stages are expected to fall (Stage One in the Yellow Sea, Stage Two just east of the Philippines), the trajectory appears to be this:

It's definitely a southward launch though. Or at least that's what they're saying.

Well, the actual trajectory won't be a straight line. I assume they're going for a path that keeps everything over and landing in international waters.
