Didn't see this posted anywhere:

Intruders from China hacked into computers and stole the blueprints for America’s new joint strike fighter planes, the F-35 and F-22, according to the chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations and Management.

You have to wonder why these things aren't created on an isolated classified network that isn't attached to the internet.

In addition to providing motivation for more gov't powers over the internet and the desire to increase TLA budgets (and/or to create even more TLAs), the cynic in me wonders whether at least some part of this is due to the likely belief of some in DoD and the defense contractors involved that this provides the perfect opportunity to hit the taxpayers up for even more money on the basis of "We gotta immediately develop a next-generation F-36 'cuz the F-35 has been compromised".

Or to bankrupt them to as they try and build it.

Probably left them on a thumb drive with the hookers on the last trip to china.

Or maybe O has taken a page out of Clinton's book and deliberately let them steal it.

Perhaps the Chinese can steal and then release Obama's birth certificate and college transcripts or do we guard those better than the plans for the best fighter in the world (F22).

I don't think so. Once you have the blueprints, you can build an airframe for relatively cheap since you avoid the R&D and design costs.

I expect that the design/development/integration of the electronics is an even greater cost, and I doubt that airplane blueprints would include details of the electronics.

What if that airframe calls for materials you don't know how to make and software you don't have to make them fly? I think the airframe blueprint is the least important part of the plane.

Obseed: Agreed.

86: They'll get that the next time or the next time or the time after. But don't worry...we'll hold hearings in an effort to provide sustainability and accountability.

Good point Uls...we're so worried about the influence a few hookers could have in Columbia but we ignore the power a trillion in T's owned by the enemy with the threat of dumping could bring? Obama would give them anything short of his long form birth certificate to keep them from dumping those before the election.

But China is our important trading partner.....

We trade jobs, R&D and any future for cheap labor and cheap goods.

Perhaps, and this assumes too much, the government provided blueprints of an airframe with critical design flaws as bait for a wild goose chase.

We might as well just let the Chinese build the planes and we buy it from them, instead of building them in-house. This billions-over-budget project will immediately save us tons of money! Outsourcing, government style! Brilliant!

Not printing a half trillion and handing it to Boeing, Raytheon, GE, et al will hurt our GIP though lol.

Well, we dont need F35s to fight Iran/Afghanistan/Kosovo/African POS countries anyway. Anything bigger, there is always a nuclear option.

China is doing what they think exacts revenge.

Some, not most, some in China believe, and it's taught to most in schools but many hold other opinions, that the reason China is where it is, is because The West took Chinese inventions, stole them and then forced China to give up its technological edge at gunpoint.

Sure that's nonsense. China decided that what the West had was of no value, told the emissaries that explicitly, sent them packing literally, and did not want to know about what The English, for example, had discovered in the way of Industrial Revolution technologies. China closed up and pulled up the gates until 1850 or so.

So in order to get back to where they consider their rightful place, they are gonna take and steal everything that is not nailed down.

You can either accept that they will do this and try to prevent it, or just stop dealing with them.

I suspect that once the Chinese steal everything to get back to par, that then they will begin to file thousands of patents (and this has begun already) whereby they subtlety alter the technology, make it patentable, then file millions of new patents on the new tech.

Then, only when it benefits China, will they then begin to enforce IP.

Because then they have some stake in the game.

But only after they take everything of value.

So one day it will be illegal to copy things in China. But not in 2012...

If you all had read Chinese history, you would know this is a major motivator and we would have avoided dealing with them in good faith. It's far too late now.

China has been revenge-based, since before they knew Europe existed, before they ever read or heard any Latin-based language.

It's our fault that we ignored history to our disadvantage.
