They made an announcement about an announcement.

Why not just STFU and show us the new **** when it's ready?

Sorry....it's one of my pet peeves.

I wonder if Microsoft has a Department of Bad PR Decisions. It's the only way I know to explain some of the stuff they come up with.

E3 has been ****ing horrible last few years, and yet they again brought fail to this years conference. Better yet they don't seem to learn.

Milked sequels, reliance on 3rd party multi-plat games, and embarrassing emphasis on gimmick features that don't even work even when scripted on stage.

A $500 tablet with the form-factor, stability and ease of use of an iPad that ran browser based ASP/.Net business apps well via secure wifi or 4G, would be a significant development, imo. The healthcare market alone for devices like that could be enormous. Motion tablets running MS have been unimpressive, imo.

Not sure about an MS buy. B&N maybe? or an Apple short...

I think Paulson and Bernanke knew early on that Wile E. Coyote had already run straight off the cliff, so they chose to focus on frantic efforts to slow his descent before J6P notices the "gravity" of what has happened, hoping that the proles won't panic telegenically on the way down.

We're actually already developing them at work. I went to lunch with one project manager last week and asked him what he was working on. They are developing a C# app which runs on windows mobile and some Motorola tablet which is used by guys in shipping and receiving to manage inventory. It hooks into a couple of our major enterprise systems here.

But I agree, more widespread use of this would be incredibly awesome.

If Microsoft had any brains at all they would work with AMD and license/build an SoC that had a couple ARM cores, and a couple bobcat cores, and perhaps even a couple piledriver cores, a strong NAND controller, and everything they need for a tablet SoC. Then microsoft would figure out a way to make x86 windows switch seamlessly to the low power ARM cores. Web browsing, and most general usage would occur with the x86 sections of the chip powered down. But you fire up Office, or Photoshop, or whatever x86, and the big cores come alive, all seamlessly and transparently. You would have a tablet that surfs the web for hours, but can also bring out a lot of computing power when needed.

For most people, this tablet would also be their desktop PC, with a simple one cable USB 3.0 dock. (Xbox 3rd generation would function natively as a dock, of course!)

Using the xbox as a template for cost reduction, they could deliver the market a $300 tablet (base model) that could web browse for 18 hours, play netflix for even longer, and still function as a full fledged desktop when you plug in a cable. All for $500. $200 of that would be subsidized. Hell, they could make it into a portable gaming console to subsidize the costs and fast track it into 50 million homes. It is possible to design one 18 watt APU that contains an entire xbox 360 SoC as well as whatever else they need to make it into a full computer. They cant do it for $300 on this process node, but just like the xbox it would make money after about 3 years. A frickin boatload of money.

But all this is predicated upon Microsoft actually being smart. As we know they are dumber than a box of rocks...

Thanks, @1lumpor2. Makes sense--especially with all the buzz around the BN partnership. They may have some game with tablets. I am a bit counterculture and actually like Metro--but NOT ON A DESKTOP/LAPTOP!

Please, Microsoft, let Windows 8 have a tablet version and a desktop version (sans Metro).

Rumors have been everywhere, from a Hulu linkup, an Xbox tablet, a Nokia tablet, a Barnes and Noble tablet, Xbox Music service details, a free pony for all Windows Phone users, really, we have no clue.

...

So, what is Microsoft really going to announce today? To get a better guess, we might as well throw a dart at a wall with vaguely logical ideas and then run with it as Microsoft has done the impossible, fooled all of us.

Seriously, congratulations Microsoft. For the first time in recent history, you have all of us scrambling to uncover something, anything related to the announcement today; surely you messed up and leaked something, somewhere, right?

It is kind of odd that no one has any idea. The Barnes and Noble rumor seemed to be the consensus and extremely plausible until B&N came out and denied it....

Is that likely to be a big positive for MSFT or is this just another vaporware status announcement?
