Thanks Gen. All I remember is that laptop frying my crotch if I didn't move it after ten or fifteen minutes. I know I wouldn't be running anything that's particularly CPU intensive.

I suppose we'll have to wait awhile for pricing info and documentation on real world experiences with it. If MS is smart, they'll try and keep the scaled down version's price below the basic iPad.

Sadly, I have to agree with the made in China remark. It's not as though nothing is manufactured here but there is so much, particularly "big ticket" items that aren't it's ridiculous.

When I was shopping for this I looked REAL HARD for a laptop that was (1) made in the US, (2) had AT WORST the CPU manufactured in China and (3) was in the "compact" form-factor with an IPS display. I couldn't find one.

Many of the allegedly Korean (or Japanese!) builds (for example) are actually ASSEMBLED there but basically ALL of the components are made in China. Well, assembly doesn't count -- that's a tiny piece of the total picture.

I didn't particularly LIKE this reality, but I also couldn't CHANGE it. I lived in Chicago when the Zenith plant was shuttered and that sucked badly enough.

You mean a not-yet-released prototype running a not-yet-released O.S. experienced a crash? Do tell! Did you get vapors when it happened?

I'll be (not very) concerned if it happens in the final production system.

How did Android 1.x do? I'm sure those devices never lock up.

Or iOS 1.0...100% flawless right? (Like iOS has to support anything legacy in the first place).

If it's a consistent problem then we have right to be concerned. Otherwise it's a non-issue.

For a 1.0 device it's amazing...I'll say this again: My biggest customer has been testing these for 6+ months and they are in love. Enterprise customers are going to gobble this up.

Yeah I saw that Penny Arcade article and LOL. Can't blame them for lowered expectations.

Yeah I guess you are right.
Why bother making it work right during a press release presentation.
It's not like everybody is watching.

If you're suggesting that it should have production-level code (RTM) running on it now, then you don't know how this works at all.

I think the marketers are more to blame here than anyone. They constantly are writing checks their ass can't cash. This is a perfect example. It should have been a demonstration video, not a live demonstration.

Microsoft Surface for Windows RT tablet coming October 26th for $199?
By Tim Stevens posted Aug 14th 2012 11:27AM

We'll admit to being a little blown away when Microsoft launched the Surface -- it was an impressively polished tablet that we had heard barely a whisper of leading up to the mysterious launch event. But, there was one thing that we were still left wondering: how much would it cost? Now, with Acer getting all in a huff about competition and Microsoft conceding that some OEMs might be a little upset when this thing ships, we might just have an idea for you. According to an inside source, a session was held at Microsoft's recent TechReady15 conference in which all the launch details were laid out. If things go according to the plan detailed then, the Surface for Windows RT tablet will be launching October 26th -- no surprise there -- at a compelling price of $199.

That MSRP, almost certainly lower than Microsoft's own cost, would line it up against the Nexus 7 and even the Kindle Fire. It would put Windows 8 on the map in a big way and give a lot of people a lot of reason to try out an operating system that is going to feel rather different than previous incarnations. The question is: will it drive enough sales of media and apps for Microsoft to recoup its loss? Or, will companies like Acer put up enough of a fight in the months between now and October to keep Microsoft from undercutting its own partners? We'll find out soon, dear readers.

Selling the razors to pay for the razor blades. Quick - how much money is Amazon or Google making off of their stores?

All Microsoft has going is office, and I can tell you how poor tablets are for dealing with documents... grumble grumble RTF/PDF... Grrrr.

All I want is my D&D rulebooks at hand!

That’s some good information. But there are more questions, and the big one is about pricing. And though I can’t reveal the Windows RT device lineup I’ve viewed, I can tell you that these devices will indeed be priced comparably with the iPad. As a reminder, Apple prices the iPad at $499 to $829, depending on configuration. And not surprisingly, the Windows RT device price range will look shockingly similar to that. Shockingly.

IMHO $199 is BS. It hardly buys you a good smartphone

Got to agree with Low here. At $199 I may pick one up, but at $499 there is no compelling reason to own one.
