“Littleton police officers did everything possible within the limits of their authority.” a rep for the town tells CBS Denver. “Circumstances of eviction are civil matters and enforcement is done by sheriff’s offices, not by local police agencies. It is really unfortunate that there are two families who are victims in this case.”

Two? Really? The squatters are victims in this? **** it...wait for them to leave...go inside with a gun, and shoot them when they come back for home invasion. WTF is wrong with people?!

Additionally...why the **** did they ask the court to remove them? If I was entering my house and somebody was already in there...I would shoot first and find out who they were afterwards.

They don't live in Texas, however.

Very strange.
They lived there 13 years apparently, before the temporary relo to Indiana.
But no one among the neighbors alerted them to the squatters before they returned? Who in the neighborhood tipped folks off that the house would be vacant? Was no one hired to mow the grass or otherwise keep the property from appearing vacant?

How did the squatters get utilities turned back on, if the accounts hadn't been closed down? Fraudulently posing as the owners over the phone? Or if they were left on, how did the owners not notice spiking bills in their absence despite winterized settings?

Shouldn't the owners have left contact info/forwarding address that the utilities would have consulted in the event that anyone requested changes to current gas electric water service orders?

A part of me is asking these questions to find out what precautions would be effective as a homeowner who might be gone for long stretches during the year. What measures do they take? Folks in Florida, Arizona, etc?

PS - this in a nice enough area of Littleton, walking distance from where I used to live. Just a few blocks from Bow Mar, with nice tree lined homes sitting on huge hillside lots overlooking Bowles Lake.

It sounds like someone could find one of Geithner's vacation homes and have a party.

Pietertv1, they were notified by a neighbor according to the article. Their mistake, of course, was calling the cops and ruining their plausible deniability. Drive up, pull gun, walk in, start cleaning house.

Why couldn't they be arrested for tresspassing in the beginning?

I'm with you guys though, just show without ever calling the police and throw those people's stuff to the sidewalk. You have the right to remove unwanted chattel from your property, just make an effort not to damage it.

That house is going to be SO trashed when they finally get it back.

Isn't there a way to press criminal trespass charges against the squatters? They entered unlawfully, refused to leave, and are taking action to take the property without compensation. This story sounds like the owners must not have the spare change for an attorney. In Texas, a person has to have control of a piece of property for 10 years before he can get title through adverse possession. It takes a ruling by a judge to quiet the title. Colorado law can't be all that different, can it?
