The fight between the army and the civilians continues.

Egypt's President Morsi removes Defense Minister Tantawi, chief of staff

Move comes as newest phase in struggle between military, Muslim Brotherhood; Morsi cancels constitutional declaration aiming to limit presidential powers which the army issued in June.

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi retired the country's two top defense officials, just one week after militants attacked a police station in the Sinai peninsula, killing 16.

According to an announcement by Morsi's spokesman, Morsi deposed both chief of staff Sami Enan and Defense Minister Gen. Hussein Tantawi, naming both as his new advisers.

Morsi also cancelled a constitutional declaration aiming to limit presidential powers which the ruling army council issued in June as the election that brought him to power drew to a close.

Morsi doesn't have total control over the army YET imo...

Morsi ‘retires’ his defense minister and boots top brass in radical shake up

‘Civilian coup’ raises question of whether president will withdraw troops from Sinai after crackdown on terror, says top Israeli analyst

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi fired Defense Minister Mohammed Hussein Tantawi and Chief of Staff Sami Anan on Sunday afternoon, forcing them into retirement, and canceled the military-declared constitutional amendments that gave top generals wide powers, Egyptian state TV reported.

Morsi also ordered the retirement of the commanders of the navy, air defense and air force.

The move was seen as an unprecedented assertion of authority over the armed forces by the Muslim Brotherhood president — a “civilian coup” against the army, in the words of the leading Israeli Arab affairs analyst Ehud Yaari. The move underlined that the president and the army are not running Egypt together, but rather that the army is subject to the orders of the presidency, Yaari said.

In his assertion of authority Sunday, the president also deployed forces in the Sinai ahead of an expected major military crackdown on terror cells there. Israel last week gave Egypt permission to deploy forces in excess of limitations set out in the Israel-Egypt peace treaty in order to crack down on Sinai terror bases. Israel allowed Egypt to deploy troops close to the Israeli border, noted Yaari. “The question is, after the military operation, will Morsi take the troops back out again.”

The first real test of Morsi... getting out his troops out of the Sinai...

I still think that worst case scenario, if Egypt were to attack Israel, they would get their butts kicked... yeah they got great hardware (thanks to the US) but their military training is a joke and is corrupted to the bone.

Worst case, Israel nukes them.

If Egypt should join its Arab neighbors in battle, the study finds, Israel would most likely respond with a nuclear strike at Cairo and other major cities, as well as by destroying the Aswan dam.

Concerns grow over Egypt's WMD research

U.S. has been quiet about Cairo's weapons programs, but revolt changes the calculus

At the heart of the concern is intelligence indicating that Egypt has quietly carried out research and development on weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical, biological and missile technology.

The research and development has continued virtually without pause over the past three decades, according to interviews with U.S. officials and a review of intelligence and other government documents by NBC News.

Specifically, the intelligence indicates that Egypt has carried out experiments in plutonium reprocessing and uranium enrichment, helped jump-start Saddam Hussein’s missile and chemical weapons programs in Iraq, and worked with Kim Jong Il on North Korea’s missile program.

“If we found another country doing what they’ve done, we would have been all over them,” said a former U.S. intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Will Egypt be ``attacked`` after Iran and Syria are ``done``??

Morsi's ousting of army old guard completes Egypt's quest for revolution

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's forcing out of two top Mubarak-era defense officials on Sunday, along with his stripping of the military commander's power to enact laws and declare war, are seen in Egypt as necessary steps to complete the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak as president.

So finally the military is in the hands of Morsi...

Egypt is not going to attack Israel under any circumstances.
