Yeah, so apparently UK goons have not entered the embassy, but the threat is still there and apparently they have people stationed around the embassy as a show of force to intimidate.

This just shows how desperate US officials are to get their hands on Assange: they want their proxy (UK in this case) to go so far as to violate international law. I'd guess US officials aren't only*****ed about what WikiLeaks has already released, they're probably even more afraid of what is still to be revealed.

If they don't go in after him, Assange is going to be living in the Ecuadorian Embassy for a very long time.

British police "cannot just go barging into the embassy", according to the Liberal Democrat peer Lord Carlile.

While criticising the behaviour of Ecuador and Assange, he told the BBC that raiding the embassy under the 1984 legislation would set a dangerous precedent which could leave diplomatic premises around the world- including Britain's- vulnerable.

"I'm afraid we're going to have to be patient," he said, explaining that eventually Assange would have to emerge from the embassy and that, when he did, he would be arrested and sent to Sweden in accordance with the wishes of the UK courts.

That last comment from Hague seems rather threatening.

Appears Reuters downed the live stream.

It's almost certain that the English are bluffing with that raid threat (even if it was ever made, we have just the Ecuadorian word for that). I'm pretty sure the whole legal staff of the foreign ministry is yelling not to do it.

And of course, the Brits don't need to do it. The asylum granted by Ecuador in no way has any impact on British officials; political asylum granted by a country only applies in that country (thus the Hague's comments). And only way out of Ecuadorian embassy is through sovereign British territory. So, the moment Assange steps out of the embassy, even if trying to head to Ecuador, he is subject to arrest. Most likely the police cordon around the embassy is just to ensure this. This principle is as generally accepted as is the protection of embassy. There has been some pretty long standoffs (I think 15 years is the record so far) due to this.

Assange does not seem like a personality who would be willing to, in effect, sit in a house arrest in the embassy for years. So, I'd expect the standoff to end relatively quickly if the Brits just make sure Assange can't get out unnoticed.

It costs the British so much more to watch him all day. Assange can get donations that would pay for the entire embassy to function.

@wikileaks: ANNOUNCEMENT: Julian Assange will give a live statement infront of the Ecuadorian embassy, Sunday 2pm.

@wikileaks: Sunday the 19th is two months exactly since Assange entered the embassy. It will be his first public apperance since March.

Monetarily, Assange could outlast the Brits. But can he take it psychologically? That kind of indeterminate confinement with uncertain result is psychologically extremely taxing to anyone. And even more so to extrovert personalities (that Assange seems to be).

Garzon, who is helping Assange's defence, told Spanish newspaper El Pais that Britain had a legal obligation to allow his client to leave the country once Ecuador granted him diplomatic asylum.

"What the United Kingdom must do is apply the diplomatic obligations of the Refugee Convention and let him leave, giving him safe conduct," the former judge said.

"Otherwise, we will go to the International Court of Justice."

Yup...keeping him from being able to fly out safely, would turn every embassy in the world into a potential hostage situation...

They are and always have been that. For the best example, the case of József Mindszenty, who lived in the US Embassy at Budapest for 15 years due to exactly this kind of standoff: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B3zsef....

And this is also one of the big reasons why Chen Guangcheng (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chen_Guangc.... left the the US Embassy.

Garzon is very much just trying to give as positive image as possible for his client. The historical precedent does not support his interpretation of Assange's situation.

Ecuador should tell the UK they'll give him Assange when they give Blair to the Iraq courts. And if the US wants him, they can give Hillary, Obama, Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld to Iraq... THEN they can have Assange.

Extradition expert Anand Doobay has just put paid to Tariq Ali's idea that Assange become a member of embassy staff in order to avoid arrest: to be a diplomat in the UK, you must be accredited by the government.

Doobay said another suggestion that he be smuggled out in a "diplomatic bag" – usually used to carry post and papers – was far fetched. "Ecuador would have to breach the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations," he said.

No Australian has received more consular support than Julian Assange since legal proceedings commenced against him in 2010, according to Australian foreign minister Bob Carr in Australia's Northern Star.

However, Carr said the Australian government would not be intervening in current events.

"It is a matter between Mr Assange and the governments of Ecuador and the United Kingdom ... And the court case that led to this affair arising in this fashion ... is between Mr Assange and the government of Sweden."

The Australian government would not be making "representations one way or the other," he said.
