I am pleased to announce a new chat service for Tickerforum users.
This is not "officially" part of Tickerforum, although I have Karl asked for permission in advance of posting about it here. (thanks Karl)

Channels: #General, #Trading, #News

#Trading will be strict trading discussion only.
#News will be strict news discussion only
#General will be fairly open for now

I think that given the fast changing environment right now, chat is sometimes more efficient for trading information than forums, which may have many threads to keep track of at once. (Though threads are useful for less realtime information that you want more people to see and comment on). My intention is obviously to augment and improve the service we all share.

For those of you who have used IRC before, this should be simple to use, for those of you who have not, Here is a list from wikipedia of various IRC clients you can choose from:

I personally use irssi on unix. If you are using Windows, I'd recommend trying either mIRC or Trillian. If you are using a Mac, Colloquy and X-Chat seem to be popular.

For now I'd like to try and keep the chat in one General channel, and one Gold channel. If the service proves to be popular, then we can start spreading out.

I think that someone mentioned http://www.mibbit.com as a web-browser-based IRC client. A true IRC client is nicer, but mibbit might be more convenient for some.

/second Mibbit. It gets me through the work firewall that blocks other IRC clients.

I've just raised connection limits for mibbit so more users can connect from there, seems a few people like the web client. If office firewalls are a problem, I can set up an alternate port for you to use a real IRC client. Know what ports your office will allow through?

I assume 443 should be open and a passthrough at most places, so perhaps that will be the firewall workaround port.

mibbit isn't my service, so I can't speak for them, but we have a few users on from there, and I just signed on from there myself and had no problems ...

Is our IP addy available to others if we log in?

Ijust, you have to click on the 3rd tab to see the chat.

Yes, it is, but if you need a spoof, just send me a private message with your real host and a preferred spoof, and I'll set one up.

I might just enable spoofing for everyone at some point also.

using Xchat-Gnome - get a "connecting to irc.chattertick.com" and then it hangs until the timed out message shows up - I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy

Like any irc service, it is visible to anyone who is connected when you are.

If it's a big concern, just sent me a private message and I can set up a spoof for you.

#General is already getting a bit busy. The long term plan is to have many channels and have somewhat of a mirror of TF.

#Trading is going to be the strict trading-only channel -- Hopefully there will be some discussion of value there during trading hours.

Sorry about that "too many connections", fixed that. I raised the connection limits for mibbit's ip to much higher values.

I am going to try and write a bot to get some news to dump into #News, and maybe eventually a quotebot to sit in #Trading
