N. Korea warns of ‘thousand-fold’ retaliation Pyongyang’s rhetoric comes as reports indicate North preparing missile site
SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea warned Wednesday of a "thousand-fold" military retaliation against the United States and its allies if provoked, the latest threat in a drumbeat of rhetoric in defense of its rogue nuclear program.
Japanese and South Korean news reports said North Korea is preparing an additional site for test-firing a long-range missile capable of striking the United States.
The warning of a military strike, carried by the North's state media, came hours after President Barack Obama declared North Korea a "grave threat" to the world, and pledged that recent U.N. sanctions on the communist regime will be aggressively enforced.
Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met in Washington Tuesday for a landmark summit in which the two leaders agreed to build a regional and global "strategic alliance" to persuade North Korea to dismantle all its nuclear weapons.
Harsh rhetoric Pyongyang claims its nuclear bombs are a deterrence against the United States and accuses Washington of plotting with Seoul to topple its regime — led by the dictator Kim Jong Il who is reportedly preparing to hand over power to his 26-year-old youngest son.(edit: notice the bolded part, seems NK has now got one, or at least or a "few" nuke devices "ready to go"???)
"If the U.S. and its followers infringe upon our republic's sovereignty even a bit, our military and people will launch a one hundred- or one thousand-fold retaliation with merciless military strike," the government-run Minju Joson newspaper said in a commentary.
The commentary, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, also called Obama "a hypocrite" for advocating a nuclear-free world while making "frantic efforts" to develop new nuclear weapons at home.
"The nuclear program is not the monopoly of the U.S.," it said without mentioning the Obama-Lee summit.
Attention has been focused on North Korea since it conducted a nuclear test, its second, on May 25 in defiance of the United Nations. The U.N. Security Council responded by toughening an arms embargo, authorizing ship searches for nuclear and ballistic missile cargo and depriving the regime of the financing used to build its nuclear program.
South Korea's Dong-a Ilbo newspaper reported Wednesday that the North has begun withdrawing money from its bank accounts in the Chinese territory of Macau and elsewhere, for fear they would be frozen under the U.N. sanctions.
Preparations for missile launch? Separately, Japan's Sankei newspaper said Wednesday that the North has been showing signs of preparing two sites — the Dongchang-ni site on the northwestern coast and the Musudan-ni site on the northeastern coast — from where a long-range missile could be launched.
It was earlier thought that any launch would come only from the northwest.
South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper also carried a similar report Wednesday, quoting an unidentified government official as saying that a special train that carried a long-range missile to the northwestern site has recently moved to the northeastern site.
South Korea's Unification Ministry, Finance Ministry, Defense Ministry and the National Intelligence Service said they could not confirm the reports on money withdrawals or on the long-range missiles, which ostensibly can carry a nuclear warhead.
North Korea, which conducted its first nuclear test in 2006, is believed to have enough weaponized plutonium for at least half a dozen atomic bombs. It revealed last week that it is also producing enriched uranium. The two materials are key ingredients for making atomic bombs.
Negotiations brought to a halt The recent moves by North Korea have effectively brought to a halt the so-called six-party talks aimed at giving North Korea fuel and other benefits in exchange for dismantling its nuclear program. The talks involved the two Koreas, the United States, Japan, China and Russia.
Obama said the United States is more than willing to negotiate with North Korea to bring peace on the Korean peninsula.
"But belligerent, provocative behavior that threatens neighbors will be met with significant and serious enforcement of sanctions that are in place," he said.
Pentagon officials also warned Tuesday that North Korea's missiles could strike the United States within three years if its weapons growth goes unchecked.
Some analysts believe that the North's rhetoric is aimed at showing people at home that their government can defy the powerful United States, and giving credit for it to Kim's reported heir apparent, Kim Jong Un. The analysts say this would make Jong Un's ascent to the top acceptable to the North Koreans.

The alleged missile can only hit Alaska, which is only about half-way to Seattle.
Back during the Reagan administration, Nicaragua (then quasi-Marxist) formally declared war on the U.S. something like 50 times. It's all just noise.
If Korea is united, we'll have another economic power the size of Japan, another potential enemy, and a country that can become a real nuclear power if it so chooses.

Lb, 9 divided by 11 = .82 * 1000 = 820 Not sure the relevance. But, 820 minus 400 = 420 and 420 in Seattle is when everyone smokes the BC bud.

I think a lot of people are missing the biggest threat here. Ok, so they (probably) can't launch an ICBM into LA or NYC. But we all agree that they do in fact have nukes, right? What exactly is preventing them from selling a couple to our enemies, or sailing them into a harbor?
Sure, even that may be a relatively unlikely scenario, but it exists and can be done today.

Report: NKorea may fire missile toward Hawaii 2 hours ago
TOKYO (AP) — North Korea may fire a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July, a Japanese newspaper said Thursday, amid escalating tensions between the communist country and the United States over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.
The missile, believed to be a long-range Taepodong-2 with a range of up to 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers), would be launched from North Korea's Dongchang-ni site on the northwestern coast, said the Yomiuri daily, Japan's top-selling newspaper. The report cited an analysis by the Japanese Defense Ministry and intelligence gathered by U.S. reconnaissance satellites.
The Yomiuri said the Taepodong-2 could fly over Japan and toward Hawaii, but that it would not be able to hit the main islands of Hawaii, which lie about 4,500 miles (7,200 kilometers) from the Korean peninsula.
The missile launch could come between July 4 and 8, the paper said. It noted that North Korea had fired its first Taepodong-2 missile on July 4, 2006. Also, July 8 is the anniversary of the 1994 death of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung.
The Yomiuri report was the latest in mounting media speculation that the communist country could launch a long-range missile soon following its underground nuclear test on May 25.
A spokesman for the Japanese Defense Ministry declined to comment on the report. Officials from South Korea's Defense Ministry and the National Intelligence Service — the country's main spy agency — said they could not confirm it.
In Washington on Tuesday, Gen. James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said it would take at least three to five years for North Korea to pose a real threat to the West Coast of the United States.
North Korea is believed to have enough weaponized plutonium for at least half a dozen atomic bombs. The regime revealed last week that it is also producing enriched uranium. The two materials are key ingredients for making atomic bombs.
North Korea conducted its second nuclear test on May 25 following its first underground atomic blast in October 2006.
The United Nations last week punished North Korea over the May nuclear test by expanding an arms embargo and authorizing ship searches on the high seas in a bid to derail its nuclear and missile programs.
North Korea has claimed its nuclear bombs are a deterrent against the United States and accuses Washington of plotting with Seoul to topple its secretive regime — led by the unpredictable dictator Kim Jong Il who is reportedly preparing to hand over power to his 26-year-old youngest son, Jong Un.

How is it a small **** hole country like North Korea has the capacity of having nuclear weapons and missiles that can fire over 5000 mi. Yet they barely have any natural resources and a starving population. I would assume Chinese military technology must be behind it.

Yeah, I'd agree, it's mostly China (who, in turn, were given the technology from the Soviets... who at least semi-stole it from us). However, those Asians are smart (highest average IQs except for Jewish people, IIRC), so it doesn't surprise me that they can do this.
Maybe they've made some Transformers or something, too, huh? That would suck.

Damn, its just too good the cold war is over and the idea never occurred to the russians or there'd be a lot of holes in LA/NYC eh?

I was on Google Earth last night using the NK plug-in I linked in another thread. KJI has some palaces that would put Saddam to shame. The elite seem to have it pretty good over there; we will have to see if they are willing to risk it all.
