I had a gun stolen once. Upon discovery I immediately called the local police. They wanted the serial number, which I didn't have (young and dumb). I told them "look it up, I don't know. I bought it at X".

They said "sir we don't keep records like that". I said "BS. If that gun is found at a crime scene you'll be on my porch that day". They said I'd have to contact the dealer where I bought it, so I did.

He told me that without a date of sale he'd be looking through piles of 4473 forms and wasn't all that jazzed to do so (but willing if need be). Then he told me something I didn't know: That the state Department of Licensing would have the record and I could get it from them with just my name. He told me they'd deny it but would give it up if pushed.

Sure enough, I had the serial number from them after pushing through the denial stage. They had the serial numbers of everything I'd purchased over the counter.
