Not that it makes it any more acceptable, the same kind of scams are pretty common
wherever, whenever police bust these terrorist plots. One suspects foreign intelligence agencies provide the techniques of fraud, forgery etc. as part of terrorist training and that this information is then disseminated to those just looking to make a quick buck.

I've heard this story before about people's pets ending up on marketing lists but when and how does that happen? Where does it start? I have 5 cats and I'm pretty sure none of them are anywhere in a database... I think.. well, 3 of them have been to the vet but... they only have a first name!

Although I agree with the sentiment of this Ticker, it might leave the the casual reader a minor misconception.

Your typical "wetback" illegal alien cannot get a TIN. In order to get a Taxpayer Identification Number you have to show a valid I94 form, which pretty much precludes anyone who entered the US illegally from getting one.

IIRC, you also have to give a reason for needing one, for example, that you are the dependent of someone who is legally working in the US who cannot claim you as a dependent on his 1040 without a TIN, and the person who is legally working here (and thus has a Social Security Number) must back this up with documentation.

I've said this before on the TF and I will say it again, if you are here speaking out on the forums about these issues, or anywhere for that matter (at home with your family, at work with colleagues, church, the bar, the high school football game etc.) and you are doing business with any of these large bailed out banks without a plan of action to wind down that business and move your transaction base somewhere else then you are also supporting all of this bull**** activity.

Every action has consequences and we have for too long now only thought of our own short term gains or pleasures and it has stolen a great deal of our future well being. Every American who stands for the Constitution and is reading this Ticker has a sworn duty to act now!

My cat is on mailing lists. I think it started when I got a pet warehouse discount card and for some twee marketing reasons they want you fill it in using your pet's name &c.

So junk mail from pet warehouse started coming with his name on and from there it was only a matter of time before he was receiving Macy's catalogs. I don't think he's ever gotten anything from a bank (yet).

Banks are unconcerned with a person's ability to repay principal. In fact, they bet against it. What they are looking for is the establishment of an annuity with their extension of credit like this. If the occasional bad apple defaults entirely, despite the ABA's locked down bankruptcy laws, the banks take it out on their other customers or, if push comes to shove, get the Fed to step in.

I once worked for a wealthy hotelier/restaurantuer who, rather than have me get a purchase order or open an account with vendors would simply tell me to go and get
what was needed and he would reimburse me. I, of course, didn't mind at all as I got all the credit card reward points and, as a result of my new shopping patterns such as going to Circuit City and buying 25 TV sets, my credit card limit
was increased to levels well beyond what my income might suggest.

I suspect something like this was what was going on with our terrorist shuttle driver and why his bank was willing to offer him such high limits on a meagre income.

I think I gave my cat a gift subscription to a magazine once. Magazines and retailers get paid for the names in their databases. Within months he was getting all kinds of mail.

It actually opens up all kinds of possibilities. Maybe my cat can sell credit default insurance to Goldman like AIG did so S&P can give their stuff a AAA rating.

It has happened a lot over the last decade or so........

Half the "progressive" people on financial blogs dream of maxing out their lines of credit and declaring BK. Most minorities get away with it because when they are cut off they scream discrimination.

It is clear that based on math no one should lend them a dime, but the problem starts at the very top.
