I cannot see any scenario that does not result in a protracted period of "doom and gloom" for the USA. Dubai may get it much worse. I see austerity and collapse of life as most know it. It will take time for people to re-learn what is of value and what is not.

The three days I spent in Dubai was enough to see that the Sheik's giant amusement park was just insane. Even in 2007 the malls were pretty empty and the business district was a ghost-town besides the workers/slaves.

Couple of things about iPhones in china.

People who wanted iPhone already bought it in black market for last couple of years. These are unlocked iPhone with wifi so they can use with any GSM network.
People are not used to monthly plans, they use pay as you go plan paying for minutes used.

Due to inability to attract suckers with exorbitant dataplans,iphone isnt exactly hit in India too.They rolled over new 2G networks in metros but ppl are not convinced.
Unofficial estimate 55k phones all-together from Oct08 by all operators.Not good.
